Make use of logs from clearing your property.
Whether you're opening a building site, clearing pasture, or taking out hazard trees along a driveway, land clearing often leaves you with more wood than you know what to do with. The default options are chip it, burn it, or pay someone to haul it away. There's a fourth option that a lot of people overlook: mill the better logs into lumber you can actually use.
Portable sawyers do this kind of work regularly. They bring a bandsaw mill to your property, cut the usable stems into boards, beams, or slabs, and leave you with material for a shed, fencing, barn repair, furniture, or stock for later projects. You don't have to truck multi-ton logs to a commercial mill.
If most of what you cut is limb wood, heavily forked, rotten, or under about 8 inches, chipping or firewood is usually the more practical path. A good sawyer will say so after a quick look or a phone conversation.
Most portable sawyers charge by the board foot (often $0.25–$0.50) or by the hour ($60–$125 is common). A handful of decent logs from a clearing job might run a few hundred dollars to mill, plus travel or setup depending on distance. Compare that to hauling and tipping fees, and milling sometimes comes out ahead — especially if you'll use the lumber yourself.
